Regional Meetings – President’s Report from the Road

Since our last Newsletter, I have attended two regional meetings. The first was the Western Regional Meeting in Portland, Oregon September 5-8, 2018. We were at the Sheraton, located at the Portland airport. It was a successful meeting that was well attended by many members. Several past Regional VP’s and Executive Members attended and contributed. It was also the first Regional meeting of our new Executive Director, Sheri Csom. I thank them all for their continued effort and participation in the association.

The main education session was provided by EDT Engineers. The young engineer I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with was quite impressive. He has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and worked for the US Government in the Department of the Navy. He was part of a team that tested Naval warships when they came in for service. He had amazing stories and is a great representation of the qualified engineers at EDT. Someone I feel confident in recommending to investigate any mechanical failure claim I would have. Thank you to EDT for their presentation and for assisting the insurance industry nationwide.

A special thank you also to David and Stacy LeNorman for all of their work putting together the meeting. It was successful and all involved are looking forward to another successful meeting in early October of 2019 for the Western Region. The 2019 meeting is scheduled for Las Vegas, Nevada and I encourage members from all regions to attend.

The second regional meeting for this newsletter was the MidStates Region, my home region, and someplace I am always happy to be and attend. We have had record meetings the last few years. This year it was held October 3rd through the 5th at the Embassy Suites in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The first day kicked off with another Umpire and Appraisal class for the CIA and CIU designation. I am proud to report that 19 members attended the certification class.

Instructor Mr. Kevin Hromas is an incredibly knowledgeable educator. I attended the class and can state that the class is thorough and region specific. The exam is legitimate, and no one is guaranteed to pass. The class is very worthwhile. I commend the efforts of Joel Moore of Gulf Coast Claim Service and Mr. Kevin Hromas for their efforts to get this program up and started. I believe it is a stepping stone for the association and the members to obtain educational opportunities that are not readily available throughout the industry. Appraisal and Umpire opportunities, for our member firms, are becoming more common throughout the industry.

That night, there was a reception and dinner. The following morning was the Advisory Council and Business meetings. The Advisory Council had all six council members in attendance. There was a very good Q&A in the morning going through changes in the industry. The meeting was moderated by Mr. John Henderson of Wickizer & Clutter.

The afternoon lunch and learn was presented by ACR. ACR,, is a Midwest restoration company that specializes in Maintaining Operational Continuity. They provided a detailed class on moisture mitigation and new cost savings methods. They are in their 32nd year of business, and we thank them for their time and support.

We are thankful for all of the MidStates members that attended. More than 30 people attended the meeting. It was a great representation of the strength of the MidStates Region and the number of quality insurance professionals in the area.

John and Cindy Henderson are owed a big thank you for their preparation, hosting, and organizing of the event. We had two great dinners, a fine hotel to stay at, and a professional event from start to finish.

We are glad to announce that Nino Berardi of LJ Shaw, Lombard, Illinois was nominated as the incoming RVP. We know that he will do a great job and continue the successful tradition of the RVP’s in the Midstates Region.
